Ashland, Oregon – June 19-30, 2024

In June, 2024 we will host ten days of plastering, applying earth and lime finishes alongside Kyle Holzhueter, James Henderson, and Lydia Doleman. Professional plastering experience or reference is required for attendance.

This is a paid work exchange, you will earn $30/hr while plastering and work alongside three seasoned professionals. We will be applying a variety of finishes, including Gold Hill Clay Plaster earth finishes, Shikkui and Otsu Japanese lime finishes, and other site-mix finishes on interior walls including timberframe infill and more organic shapes around a complex masonry heater and a variety of niches.

Our goal is accomplishing high-level finishes while refining technique and breadth of skill of participating plasterers. Our teachers will spend time plastering as well as supervising and instructing.  

We will have two 5-day sessions of plastering, June 19-23 Wed-Sun, and June 26-30 Wed-Sun, with a 2 day break in-between. Minimum attendance is one of the 5-day sessions but our strong preference is for participants to be here for the full 10 days of plastering.

The hours for the plastering work days (Wed-Sun) will be approximately 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Our maximum attendance will be approximately 14 plasterers. Daily work will include plaster prep, mixing, and cleaning in addition to plastering, and we will have some time specifically devoted to instruction/demonstration that will not be active plastering time, but we will maximize participants time spent on the wall and will have some dedicated help for prep/mixing/cleanup.

Lunches will be offered (fresh-cooked organic options) and we will be asking for donations to help cover those costs. We will also be making a number of shared rooms (2 people) available on-site in our neighboring home for a cost of $300 for 5 days, or other local accommodations can be found in Ashland.
